But still, parts of the humorous short “The Internet Party,” from which we briefly excerpt above, ring true. Like the perky, plucky “Google,” who’s played by a much less pretty but equally nerdy version of Marissa Mayer.

Kevin Rose’s online-video outfit, Revision3, has launched a show based on the top video picks on Kevin Rose’s social-news startup, Digg. The show launched tonight at 9, while Kevin Rose’s messaging and file-sharing venture, Pownce, threw a party. How does Kevin Rose find the time?

Probably by not watching shows like the newly launched “Digg Reel.” Instead of letting you just watch the top-rated videos on Digg, “Digg Reel” shows them to you — but not before it wastes 96 seconds of your life with a bumper and chatter from overly loquacious host Jessica Corbin.

The Library of Congress has teamed with Flickr to make its vast catalog of images available on the Web, starting with 3,000 photographs with no known copyright holders. The goal of the project is to provide exposure to these rarely seen images and to harness the Flickr community to compile missing data — like the photographer, subject, and copyright holder — for free. As far as partnerships go, Flickr seems to be the winner. They gain access to thousands of beautiful and historic photographs. Having the Library of Congress on board may even encourage other public institutions to follow suit and join their tagging project, “The Commons.” The Library of Congress will likely get what they paid for: inane comments and simplistic tags rather than the useful metadata they seek.

If not, it’s still a good clip. A bunch of robotic shorthairs in radiation suits and dorky eyeglasses singing maybemaybemaybemaybemaybemaybemaybe better come back later next week — produced by Brian Eno, who went on to do the Windows 95 startup sound — was a finger down the throat of the Rolling Stones’ contemporary disco hit “Miss You.” As they later sang, Devo were the band for those of us through being cool.

“Extraordinary. Incredible. Tremendous. Amazing. Unprecedented. Extraordinary (again). Great. Revolutionary. Great. Extraordinary (yes, again). Unbelievable.” All these words Steve Jobs used to describe the ultra-thin MacBook Air during yesterday’s Macworld keynote. And all without any apparent regard to how that makes laptops which aren’t so thin as the MacBook Air feel. Instead, it takes this brave video from YouTube auteur Kevin Nalts to expose the truth.

Kids these days don’t have any respect for the traditions of higher education. Instead of trolling though musty books for their term papers, they’re regurgitating whatever material pops up in their Web browser. Wikipedia sourcing is so rampant, says Tara Brabazon, a professor at Brighton University, that she has dubbed the phenomenon “University of Google.” She says students don’t attend school to learn to Google: “They can all do that before they get here.” In other words, save your $120,000. Do you know how many OLPCs you could buy with that?

Let’s pretend to talk business for a moment. DVD sales made up only 30 percent of porn publisher Vivid’s revenues last year. That’s down from around 80 percent, Vivid cofounder Steven Hirsch told the Sydney Morning Herald. He blames the YouTubes of the porn world, free sites offering low-res video. It’s a tragedy. It’s a shame. You likely don’t care.

As the chart shows, three of the top threats to the old-school Internet porn world are XTube, AEBN, and YouPorn. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, XTube earns “millions” from DVD and streaming video sales. AEBN, despite its lower traffic numbers, annually pulls in around a hundred million dollars from advertising. YouPorn, which faces a copyright infringement suit from Vivid, earns about $120,000 in revenues per month, according to Portfolio.

Record label EMI will lay off 2,000 and shift its focus toward digital music, private equity investor and company topper Guy Hands told the Financial Times. Hands said the music industry operates on fallacies with origins in “the phenomenon of the 1990s and the CD” and as a result, companies like EMI are hemorrhaging cash. EMI, for instance, spends $50 million a year destroying unsold CDs. Guess whose model Hands said the industry should follow to turn itself around?
