Is it any wonder why Yahoo’s image is so unpolished? The ranks of top PR people available to buff it have been rapidly shrinking. And with CEO Jerry Yang all but hiding in a cave, there’s been little for the survivors to do. The latest departure: Joanna Stevens, to parts unknown. That Stevens, an eight-year Yahoo veteran, would leave on such short notice, without another job lined up, is telling. It means, in short, that this ultimate Yahoo loyalist has finally tired of the company’s mismanagement. After eight years on the Corporate Communications team, Joanna Stevens has decided to open the next chapter of her life. Her last day on the team will be October 30th.

Her contributions to Yahoo! have been immeasurable - from spearheading major announcements to managing countless crises to helping to grow our team. She’s worked closely with three generations of Yahoo! executive teams, providing valuable guidance on corporate communications strategies, messaging, and positioning. She’s helped the company navigate through crises that ranged from unprecedented lawsuits to adult content to market rumors. Jo has also driven financial communications, played a major role in countless earnings announcements, stockholder meetings, annual reports, and Analyst Days. Jo also led the team through pivotal announcements and acquisitions, overseeing the communications strategy and execution for major finanical transactions, including Overture, Flickr, RightMedia, and Alibaba to name just a few.

Jo also helped reinforce the Yahoo! brand externally and internally in her work. She conceived of the Yahoo! Yodel Challenge, leading the tour across the country and turning Wiley Gustafson, our litigious yodeler, into an enthusiastic emcee. She also led the cross-functional team that engineered a memorable 10th Anniversary for Yahoos and users around the world. And, of course, Jo is to be thanked for the countless stories that you’ve never read about Yahoo!.

May Petry, who is also VP of PR for Connected Life, will step in as interim leader until Jo’s replacement is found. I’d like to thank Jo for nearly eight years of dedication to Yahoo!. Please join me in wishing her all the best.

Can you believe that last week’s Web 2.0 Summit was the fourth such conference? Its humble beginnings were barely in evidence, as venture capitalists, corporate biz-dev types, and M&A scouts seemed to outnumber the startup founders they were trying to hunt down. Friday afternoon was a return to the old school, however, with Flickr cofounder Stewart Butterfield and LiveJournal founder Brad Fitzpatrick among the presenters. Sadly, John Doerr, the expert inflater of the first dotcom bubble, did not cry. Check the photo gallery for the conference’s final, terrifying orgy of schmoozing. Some participants were so exhausted that, by the closing cocktail party, they were making deals with their eyes closed.

WEB 2.0 SUMMIT — At this conference’s closing cocktail party, organizer John Battelle noted that Valleywag had stopped using our favorite photo of the George Hamilton-lookalike online-advertising magnate. So sorry, John! Consider this your fond farewell to all the moneybags who paid $3,595 to mix with a handful of geeks and hacks. “Now I’m going to get blotto,” said Battelle. WEB 2.0 SUMMIT — At a panel discussion about making money in online video, Federated Media VP of sales Chas Edwards said he’d pulled checks “from a million dollars down to $10,000″ for video ads on Federated’s network, which includes the popular shows Diggnation and Ask a Ninja. The burning question: Who paid a million bucks to Federated, run by Web 2.0 conference co-chief John Battelle, and for what? We were unable to tackle any of Federated’s execs at the jam-packed conference Wednesday. Somebody get Edwards or jbat to spill the details, and send it to us. Otherwise we’ll wonder if Edwards wasn’t actually referring to Microsoft’s non-video advertorial deal for which Federated bloggers wrote ad copy. Why? Because Edwards also said the biggest dollars come from selling “host endorsements” rather than separate advertiser-produced spots.

Is Zooomr, Kris Tate’s Flickr copycat, on the rocks? Tate seems to think so: “I’m working my ass off like you can’t believe in Japan. If Japan doesn’t go anywhere, you can kiss Zooomr good-bye. Americans don’t care about photos like the Japanese — by embracing Japan’s economy, we can save Zooomr financially.” [Zooomr]

Silver-tongued entrepreneur Auren Hoffman was able to extinguish a growing wave of criticism directed at his people-search company Rapleaf with a single blog post. He promised to mend his ways and bring fixes to Rapleaf’s privacy practices. We didn’t have much faith in Rapleaf’s reform– Hoffman’s post was mostly rhetoric, little change. A week later, Hoffman has gone out of his way to prove our doubts by partnering with MerchantCircle. MerchantCircle, of course, is the local merchant directory we’ve criticized before. Of course, Rapleaf and MerchantCircle are in some ways a perfect match.

A directory on its face, MerchantCircle at its root, it is a cynical, poorly-conceived search-engine-optimization play using deceptive techniques to harvest business data. MerchantCircle is notorious for autodialing merchants to build its database. The recorded message tries to dupe merchants into entering their data with the lie that someone has left a bad review. It’s a classic bait-and-switch not unlike Rapleaf’s “someone has searched for you” emails. Hoffman’s new buddies have used this technique for at least a year despite numerous complaints.

MerchantCircle’s response, like Hoffman’s has been to pay lip service to its critics. Entrepreneur John Battelle contacted CEO Ben Smith a year ago. Smith promised to address the deceptive practice but — surprise, surprise — MerchantCircle continues the spam-calling to this day.

And Auren Hoffman can’t plead ignorance to MerchantCircle’s behavior. He has been prominently listed as an advisor to the company for quite some time.

How will Hoffman spin this one? His words promise one thing. His actions, quite another. As in the real world, one’s reputation is best judged not by what one says, but by the company one keeps.

Could it be true? Eric Savitz of Barron’s blogs about the apparent comeback of his former employer, The Industry Standard. The weekly tech trade magazine inflated, and imploded, more or less in sync with the dotcom bubble; shuttered by owner IDG, it’s seen a series of mostly pathetic attempts to resuscitate its website, all of which floundered. But the website now promises that the Standard is “coming back.” Odd timing, given Time Inc.’s shuttering of Business 2.0, and the discontinuation of the Red Herring’s print edition. Founder John Battelle tersely wishes the new Standard luck. I’m betting that the publication bypasses print and goes straight to the Web — just like Battelle’s current venture.

I wish Robert Scoble, the intermittent blogger, would take a break from making videos, too. In response to criticism of his incoherent videos about would-be Google killers, he’s created a fresh set of incoherent videos explaining what friends are and how Facebook understands the meaning of your personal relationships. Again, he pulls out the whiteboard and marker — green this time — to “illustrate” his so-called point, a point that could be better made in a brief blog post. I’ve watched the painful videos so that you don’t have to. But this time, there’s some welcome good news.

Robert Scoble is approaching the hardcoded limit of 5,000 friends imposed by Facebook. Soon, Scoble will no longer be able to add new friends! Hooray! And it gets better: Scoble says once he hits the limit, “After that… There’ll be another Scoble.” Huzzah, huzzah! Facebook expressly forbids a single individual from maintaining two profiles:

… you agree not to use the Service or the Site to … register for more than one User account, register for a User account on behalf of an individual other than yourself, or register for a User account on behalf of any group or entity.

Robert Scoble may soon be banned from Facebook entirely! Hooray!

So what was Scoble trying to say anyways in these more than 20 minutes of video, besides outing himself as a Facebook scofflaw? In four sentences: Relationships exist on a spectrum of closeness. Each relationship has things in common (participation, common interests and activities, friends, locations, messages, applications, events, and work — Scoble’s categories, not mine). The closer a person and the more commonalities he has, the more information appears in Facebook’s feed. Thus, Facebook does know true friends who are close from “fake” friends, enemies, or just people you want to spam with your blog entries.

And in classic Scoble fashion, he concludes by tearing his argument down. He explains how a “fake” friend can emulate your participations, common interests and activities, friends, locations, messages, applications, events, work, etc. and elevate themselves to “real” friend without Facebook knowing that you are not. Brilliant. If only being self-contradictory were against Facebook’s terms of service, too.

Okay, this is ridiculous. On what planet is the bikini-wearing readership of TechCrunch sufficient enough to warrant Federated Media serving up the above ad on its site? None, of course. Federated Media founder John Battelle emails us to point out that the bikini ad from DivaVillage.com and other gender benders displayed to the site’s mostly male readers aren’t a result of targeting gone awry, but simply the result of Federated Media serving up low-paying, untargeted “remnant” ads when it’s not able to sell ads at full price. Battelle also notes that it’s TechCrunch’s decision, not Federated’s, to accept those ads. So there you have it, TechCrunch readers: Michael Arrington, according to John Battelle, thinks you want to buy bikinis.

A tip for those of you trying to mingle with successful entrepreneurs and VCs: Attend more than just the standard tech meet-and-greets. The people who are really in a position to help you with your startup never go to them anyway. So where to go instead? Check out events like last night’s Lotus Vodka release party at SoMa’s Euro-inspired restaurant Supperclub. You’ll find founders and the moneymen behind them willing to chat and unable to prejudge you based on your nametag. Refreshing. Bonus: The nontech people who attend these things make for a far better-looking crowd. Far better-looking. The full report, and a gallery of photos, follows.

So, what does vodka have to do with tech? Rob Bailey, founder of Delicious Brands, maker of Lotus Vodka, is an ex-Yahoo business-development exec who came up with the idea of creating a vitamin-infused vodka after mixing the spirit with Glacéau Vitamin Water. It’s sort of like disintermediation, except with alcohol! After quitting his position at Yahoo, he cashed in a bunch of stock options and started up Delicious Brands. He also convinced a few techie friends, like Jonathan Abrams of Friendster and Socialzr fame and Saar Gur of Charles River Ventures, to invest or advise.

Who would you have seen if you squeezed onto the packed invite list and made it out to Supperclub on Harrison Street? The uberconnected Auren Hoffman, pictured above, arrived in crutches, the result of a nasty soccer injury. He got plenty of sympathy. Yelp’s pretty-boy founder Jeremy Stoppelman and his model brother Michael showed up. The newly 30 and effortlessly charming Jared Kopf came out with his team at yet-to-launch Adroll, his stealth advertising startup. Other people spotted in the crowd: venture capitalist Eve Phillips from Greylock Partners, OpenDNS founder David Ulevitch, Foundation Capital VC Mike Brown, Robert Pazornik from LicketyShip, and Jeff Hammerbacher, Facebook’s guy in charge of data.

Supperclub is rarely, if ever, the scene of a dotcom party. There’s a large circular bar by the entrance, making the room crowded, stuffy, and difficult to maneuver around. And it’s loud, too. Lotus hired DJ Solomon to spin tunes and keep the crowd moving all night, making it all but impossible to hear in sections of the bar. Not exactly the best setting to give an elevator pitch, but perfect for learning if your VC is someone who knows how to get down.

Private Equity Hub reports that Federated Media, the online ad network, has raised $4.5 million in a second round of funding, not long after raising $2 million in venture capital, on top of some seed funding. This, of course, after rumors that FM was “overdue” in raising more funds. We’re not sure what founder John Battelle plans to do with all that cash, but perhaps, just perhaps, he might want to bankroll some hair-replacement therapy for FM videoblogger Morgan Webb.

It’s not you. It’s me. We can still be friends, right? That’s how I translate Digg founder Kevin Rose’s blog post announcement that Digg is dropping Battelle’s Federated Media as its online-ad rep and signing up with Microsoft. Says Rose:

It’s a deal similar to the one Facebook signed with Microsoft last year.

That no doubt means that Microsoft ponied up a big upfront guarantee to win Digg’s business. That kind of offer is naturally hard for Battelle’s startup to compete with. But it’s hard to get dumped for someone richer. And softening the blow by continuing to toss some scraps of business Battelle’s way? That just makes things worse. Break up like a man, Kevin.
