35+ Online Shopping Cart Solutions for Your Business

The Internet radio and on-demand streaming music service Last.fm is host to over 5 million songs spanning numerous independent and big-name studios and publishers. So today’s unveiling of a partnership with LyricFind to insert some 800,000 lyrics among Last.fm’s song catalog isn’t a full sweep. Yet it includes many popular artists old and new, from The Beatles to Pearl Jam to Radiohead, enough to satisfy plenty of listeners.

The presentation of lyrics on Last.fm is similar to how you would find such material formatted in places elsewhere on the Web; center aligned and easy to read. But there are some inconsistencies to be found insofar as text spacing is concerned. (Take a look at examples #1 and #2.)

Another concern for listeners may be the position given to lyrics relative to other features. For instance, if you visit an artist’s main page on Last.fm, you’ll find biographical information, a music player, followed by recommended material as well as sections home to videos, albums, top tracks, and the comment roll. A link for lyrics isn’t evident. Neither is it visible with a specific album page in view. Users are required to drill down to an individual song page to see a lyrical preview (if it exists). One more click will bring you to the full transcript.

Despite this structural makeup, Last.fm’s deal with LyricFind - launched for U.S.- and Canada-based listeners first, to be followed by more places “in the near future” - is worthwhile if only to give visitors an impression of a complete experience. The site has worked to do so with audio and video. Lyrics simply help to finish the picture.

For the time being, Last.fm does not display advertising beside each full lyric, but just as with real estate elsewhere in its archives, it will invite advertisers and sponsors to make themselves seen alongside text provided to users. This will involve “the ability to skin the entire page.”

100+ Sites for Green Living

SchoolPulse is an event management system for parents, teachers, coaches, PTO/PTA leaders, and anyone else involved with kids. The keys to the service are the calendars and group management tools. The site was created by John Boynton, a frustrated father of four who got fed up with the lack of tools available for parents and teachers when it came to the kids. He also wanted a way for all parents and teachers to communicate with one another so he launched his site.

The most important part of the service appears to be the groups feature. Parents, teacher and other people responsible for watching and managing children can either join an existing group or create one. The key is to enter your zipcode first to see if the group you need already exists or not. If it doesn’t then they can establish one and invite others to join. If the group is a class room then all teachers and all of the parents of the children in the class will join. From there, everyone will be able to communicate with one another and be on the same page, literally and figuratively.

The Calendar is the central focal point to the group and the entire site for that matter. It’s where all of the events and festivities are entered and schedules managed. The other elements to the group area that are very useful are the discussions area where everyone communicates, the Picture gallery where photos are shared, Wish List which gives everyone a head’s up on what’s needed and the Documents library which can contain important forms and other things that they can download or print.

Obviously, this group is geared for school but they can be customized for many other types of groups involving adults supervising children. Other types of group are Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, soccer teams, Little League teams, Chess clubs, and so on.

There’s another area dedicated to each member’s calendar of events for all of the groups they belong to. For example, if you’re a parent of three children then you could have a calendar of events for each one of their classes in addition to calendars for their recreational activities such as chess club, Sax lessons, soccer, T-Ball and Ballet. That’s a tremendous amount of activities to manage. Well, SchoolBuz will let you add all of those events to your calendar and provides a handy filtering system that will change the view of your master calendar to show what’s going in that group. It also presents all of these scheduled events to reveal any conflicting times and dates.

SchoolPulse provides a much needed service for adults that need to manage so many activities for kids. Using the tools available online these days is a great idea. However, there are things that could be done to improve the usefulness of the service. For example, they need to provide the ability to synchronize all of the appointments and events from all of these calendars with your primary calendar such as Google Calendar or Outlook which might mean supporting the iCal standard. This is important because that would allow adults to then sync that valuable information with their mobile devices which is what they depend on so much while on the run desparately trying to make it from one appointment to another. Still, SchoolPulse offers a great deal of tools.
