I don’t know whether to think recent calculations for mobile video consumption (or lack thereof) via the four top wireless carriers in America are just a little bit Halloween spooky, a big point of concern, or perhaps a good omen.

It’s come to be a common refrain that most of the country’s residents are mobile phone users. But what they do with their devices is, particularly in media consumption, very unlike the advanced markets of Asia and places elsewhere. Less than 3% of American subscribers bother to consume on-demand video in any form. “Woe is US?”

That number, released by Comscore yesterday, is certainly not an attractive one for any carrier to next to its name, especially given the activities made possible by new(ish) strides in mobile broadband penetration across the country by various networks. Whether it is a 4.4% usership that AT&T managed to serve circa June-August 2008, the 4.2% tallied for Sprint, or the the 2.4% figures each given to T-Mobile and Verizon, none shine very brightly.

To get specific for a moment, so-called amateur video clips (a la YouTube) ranked #1 among those who did use the carrier’s video services, followed by music videos, comedy clips, and film trailers. Each segment managed to net over 1 million users. (Alternatively, Web browsing, email transfers, and photo and video sharing are all working double-digit percentiles themselves, totaling over 100,000,000 users.)

As anyone with a good perception on data rates demanded of video downloads knows, the “packaged” experience delivered by carriers is 1) nowhere near like using a desktop-sized Web browser, and 2) costly. These factors, compounded with unavailability of many media options and television channels and whatnot, do much to make media services somewhat unappealing to many people. New software breaches that barrier, no doubt, but such developments are young and far from a common convenience.

What’s more, present platforms used to deliver streaming and on-demand video to handsets (only few of which manage to interface with online services really well) should really be taken for what they are: mobile broadband and Internet use. It’s entirely reasonable to think, then, that consumers wish to consider mobile broadband and Internet use very much the same way they do their land-based residential and at-work broadband connections. Which is to say, “give me access for a fee and let me do what I want to do and see what I want to see.”

Wireless carriers of course don’t appreciate this sensibility very much, since it essentially designates their task as a dumb ISP, so to speak. No value added. Just build the towers, sell the handsets and monthly connections and allow the user to do what the user wants to do from there on out. (How very libertarian and Ron Paul-like of the user. And we all know how wigs in the major parties regard independent thinkers.)

All said, I would think that an average of 2.8% penetration for the on-demand mobile video market is just a notch or two above crumb-sized. So I can only imagine that the figure is directly attributable to the age-old law of supply and demand. If the product isn’t adequate, nor will demand be. Time for carriers to be a little more free-thinking (philosophically, if not financially) with their mobile media delivery models, it seems.

The exclusive deal will help Vodafone, Europe’s biggest mobile operator, boost mobile usage and with it data revenues, and also helps MySpace launch itself in the European mobile market.MySpace, bought by media giant News Corp for $580 million in 2005, has been looking to boost its global network of users via international expansion, offering mobile and video-related content.

“The partnership will enable millions of Vodafone customers to access MySpace mobile, allowing them to edit their own MySpace profiles, find and add friends, post photos and blogs and send and receive MySpace messages while on the move,” the two companies said in a statement.

Vodafone, which plans to initially roll out the service in the UK in the first half of 2007, said it would pre-load MySpace mobile software on select handsets in the future, and also make it available for download from its Vodafone live! portal.

MySpace, which lets members look up friends’ blogs and songs posted by their favorite artists, launched in the UK last year and has been looking to spread its wings in Europe. Last month it launched its French website and it has a beta site in Germany.

TechAddress: What are some of the main features?

• Enterprise products: NewsGator Enterprise Server is targeted to the Fortune 1000 and other large companies (5,000+ users) as well as organizations with 250 or more employees and a high concentration of knowledge workers such as pharmaceutical/chemical manufacturers, law firms, PR/marketing agencies, high tech companies, government and professional services firms. NewsGator Enterprise On-Demand is more suited for smaller companies (less than 250 employees), divisions or functional groups of larger organizations without IT staffs supporting them. TechAddress: Any new things in particular that you’re working on right now?

NewsGator: Of course. NewsGator Enterprise On-Demand will be coming out later in January. A significant update of NewsGator Enterprise Server will be available in the first half of the year. TechAddress: Where do you see your company heading in the future?

NewsGator: Although RSS is one of the hottest Web 2.0 technologies around, it’s still only being knowingly used by a small percentage of the Internet population (less than 5% according to Forrester). As the technology matures and gains wider adoption, we plan to continually innovate and make it easier for people to access RSS and Web 2.0 content and maintain and even grow our leadership position.

TechAddress: Any negative feedback or criticism regarding technology and services?

NewsGator: Not really, but used the wrong way, RSS can become as bad as e-mail in terms of information overload. If people subscribe to too many feeds it can be problematic. This means that businesses should think about the knowledge management implications of RSS and use best practices when embarking on a corporate initiative.

TechAddress: So what would you say is the guiding principle behind your company?

NewsGator: Making it as easy as possible for as many people and companies to take full advantage of the power of RSS.

One of our biggest customers are the NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) where we are currently testing it out in the Pacific islands for Tsunami or National disaster alerts. With Group2call they’ll now be able to reach the masses by broadcasting emergency alerts directly to any resident mobile or landline telephone. We are also seeing lots of interest from large corporations based in Florida who are also interested in leveraging our services for mass communications during Hurricane season.

TechAddress: Any new things in particular that you’re working on right now?

Group2call: We’re still perfecting the system but we’re constantly looking at new ways to integrate voice broadcasting into existing software applications. Google Calendar was one idea. We also powered www.call-in-sick.com a site which we launched as a gimmick to get our name out there. It gave us major, global publicity and we still get thousands of people calling in sick every day with our service. We are also experimenting using VoiceXML and plan to leverage and integrate this to make our service even easier to use.

TechAddress: Where do you see your company heading in the future?

Group2call: An International message broadcast service. We’re currently testing the service in the UK and New Zealand and hope to offer our services in other major countries by end of 2007.
