Now we’ve learned a much more colorful part of Anderson’s history: In 1985, when he was fourteen and in high school in Escondido, California, Anderson was subject to one of the largest FBI raids in California history after hacking into a Chase Manhattan Bank computer system and subsequently showing his friends how to do it. He was never arrested because he was a minor, but the FBI confiscated all of his computer equipment and some newspaper accounts of the incident stated incorrectly (see image below) that he was “convicted in federal court of computer hacking and placed on probation” (the statements were corrected in subsequent articles). Anderson used the hacker name “Lord Flathead.”

MySpace and Anderson would not comment on this post. But most of the information is now available online as news articles from the 1980s (and earlier) have been added to Google and other search engines. We came across an initial article accidentally and started investigating from there. Some of the information in this post has been obtained by a source close to Anderson.

Because of the difficulties involved in getting a game started, less people show up to the courts and the likelihood of actually gathering enough people to start playing a game is further diminished. This pattern repeats itself, resulting in most basketball courts ending up vacant the vast majority of the time.

Nofouls.com was created with the purpose of reversing this cycle. Nofouls.com makes it easy to find basketball courts in your area. Our database currently features over 1000 basketball courts. If a court is missing, it can easily be added using Google Maps satellite view to pinpoint its location. Players can schedule games, communicate, and coordinate with each other, all centered around their basketball court of choice.

Mashable’s Take: Based in Philadelphia, PA., Nofouls is, as the descriptions above suggest, a very basic service. It has only one outstanding purpose. To chart and track what is happening, where it is happening. But that I think is what holds an appeal. Nothing excessive about it. All you get is a database of basketball courts, laid upon a Google Map mashup, and a way to organize play in those locations listed. I imagine lots of fans of the game will appreciate the simplicity.

NO, there’s nothing super social about it. And given its focus on some 1,000 courts in and around its home city, many a visitor will perhaps find that it holds no relevance to them. But users’ ability to add local spots to the existing supply keeps it interesting. If its creators manage to convince enough people to sign on and contribute, Nofouls’ utility will grow tremendously. Maybe to the point that it becomes a national, if not international resource for people to better network their own communities through. What’s more, it wouldn’t be too big a leap for Nofouls to eventually involve traveling tournaments, perhaps to coincide with March Madness, or even to establish a seasonal or annual calendar all its own.

For the time being, the foundation of Nofouls seems a solid one. It’s easy to use, and its visual appeal will serve a very general audience, both of which are important to its success. There’s the matter of a first sale as well as the need to register return visitors. And I sense it is capable of making good on each task.

What you can do is upload an image directly through Pikchur or send one to your assigned Pikchur email address via MMS or email from your phone or computer.

In concept, Pikchur is similar to TwitPic in that you can upload a photo and it will appear in your Twitter stream. A caption can be manually added for direct and MMS uploads, and your subject line will be the caption for photos sent via email. Pikchur moves beyond Twitter, however, and sends your images to a handful of other services like Tumblr, Pownce, Facebook (via the Pikchur Facebook application), FriendFeed and Jaiku. The result is a broad distribution for your photo within the micro-blogosphere, giving you a one-stop shop for immediate photo sharing.

There aren’t any import options for automatically bringing in photos from other photo-sharing sites for redistribution purposes, but a little bird has told me that Pikchur is working on some upcoming Flickr integration, so perhaps such import options will be added in the near future. Given the lack of photo importing for redistribution purposes, Pikchur really caters to mobile users that would like a quick and easy way to send out photos while on the go, so its updating capabilities sent out to microblogging platforms is appealing in its simplicity for this purpose.

Nevertheless, Pikchur is a handy service that makes photo distribution a brainless task, especially from an operational standpoint around your email. As services like Xoopit better turn your email into a searchable media database, microblogging and other auto-distribution methods can become very useful as media-sharing tools for a wide range of users.

Normally, your search efforts involve one engine or another. You go to Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Live Search for the general Web, and perhaps photos, etc. You visit Digg, Reddit, or Yahoo Buzz for cool links. YouTube, DailyMotion and others for videos. The list goes on. But in the event that the default dimensions of your Web browsing experience gets dull, tedious and in need of a change (this is the moment of change, after all!), there is Widexplorer to satisfy a new leaning.

Sporting black, a dozen categorical hotlinks, Widexplorer is a simple thing. No miracles being performed there. Nonetheless, its presentation is the kicker. Click any keyword below the search bar to get a grip on what that means.

For instance, the ‘buzz’ label takes you to all the top Web 2.0 linking services. And all are laid one beside the other. Digg first, then Yahoo Buzz, followed by Delicious, Reddit, Mixx, Technorati, Popurls. It’s really quite interesting. It’s better than browsing through tabs, in a way, because there’s absolutely no clicking to do. Except for the movement of the horizontally-savvy scrollbar in the window. For users of scrollballs of various sizes, it’s even more simple to operate. My Apple-issued Mighty Mouse is a wonder here. You will want to play with this one for quite some time if you happen to be similarly equipped, I think.

I’ll leave you to browse the remaining options available at Widexplorer, but suffice it to say that this one, if nothing else, deserves a bookmark. The only reservation to have with it - other than its impracticality as a day-in-day-out search service - is that website load times can leave you waiting for the white space to fill out with data. But that is the case with the Web browsing process in and of itself, so it’s hard to nab Widexplorer on that point. In all, I say you take a look. Just one to five minutes’ time will have you sold. No question about it.

Selling management on the value of investing time and resources into building an online community using social media is a challenge, and you need all of the support you can get. One way to convey the value of corporate social media participation is to leverage published statistics about who’s using social media platforms and how they are using it. There have been a host of new studies published recently that you can use to help make the case for your own company’s involvement:

The Society for New Communications Research recently published their report titled, “New Media, New Influencers & Implications for Public Relations” that provides several case studies illustrating how social media has benefited organizations like the American Red Cross, the Mayo Clinic and Quicken Loans. Among their findings, “Social media is rapidly becoming a core channel for disseminating information. Fifty-seven percent of this group of early social media adopters reported that social media tools are becoming more valuable to their activities, while 27% reported that social media is a core element of their communications strategy.”

One of the most popular studies is the Universal McCann’s Social Media Research Wave 3 research report, which looked at 17,000 Internet users in 29 countries. According to this study, social media can have a dramatic impact on your brand’s reputation. “34% post opinions about products and brands on their blog and 36% think more positively about companies that have blogs.”

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research recently released the results on the usage of social media in the Inc. 500. Of note here, “Just over one quarter of the Inc. 500 reported social media was very important to their business/marketing strategy in 2007. That number has increased to 44% just one year later.”

If you’re especially interested in stats about Facebook or other social networking sites, Comscore released some statistics earlier this month announcing the growth of social networking worldwide. Included is the statistic that social networking use grew 25% year over year worldwide, with notable increases in Europe and the Middle East.

Rapleaf released the results of their study examining the gender and age of social network users. Note that these two studies were conducted independent of each other, so don’t confuse the results between them.

As part of the promotion for their book Groundswell, Charlene Li and Josh Bernhoff created the Social Technographics profile tool where users can plug in some basic information and then see how participation varies among demographics. The resulting graphs are useful in illustrating the social media habits of your target audience. You can also use Trendpedia or BlogPulse to create interesting visuals examining keyword statistics about topics in your industry.

How’s this for science trivia. SciVee, a science video upload site that’s been steadily growing itself for about a year now, has just this week unveiled a new option for users to upload feature material in the form of “postercasts” that enable users to complement their traditional video presentations with an interactive documentation component. The synchronous delivery of these is remarkably user-friendly.

SciVee offers quite a few viewing options to users not including the postercast dimension. Many are quite useful, too. If, say, you click a typical link on SciVee, you’ll generally see a normal-sized video, or a miniaturized video with a text-based column in the main column of the page. These layouts are sensible, particularly when the subject matter warrants prioritization of one component over another. Yet, what a postercast upload does is give viewers a large-size graphic that triggers a full-screen experience. I don’t think it’s too much to say that this is something which will pique the interest of quite a few site members and prospective registrants.

Now, SciVee isn’t likely to be out-and-out mauled by hits because of this addition to its toolset. Though Web video viewers are no strangers to scientific experiments, they’re normally more transfixed by YouTube-bound delights. The Mentos-plus-Coke mix, for one, which brought many millions of people to YouTube’s archive. Chemistry gone viral, so to speak. But some would likely prefer a more exclusive venue to observe science-related activities, particularly those with educational and serious academic connotations. So they’ll go to SciVee. Or JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments), a site that recently grabbed the interest of the National Library of Medicine and commissioned to index the repositories of MEDLINE and PubMed.

It’s been proven in a number of cases that online efforts in the networking and media worlds to address niche interests is effective in building devoted communities. It is the classic outlook that the value of the long tail is high. And SciVee, as well as JoVE, seem to exploit the sector well, in focus and in delivery. SciVee, it should be said, makes for a remarkably stronger impact insofar as user experience, and a good bit more with Postercasts involved. But both are thorough in addressing their core pursuits.

Just what does Drama 2.0 do? One of activities I’m most heavily involved with is the trading of financial instruments (primarily option contracts). Trading is a wonderful exercise not only because there’s a lot of money to be made (and lost, of course) but because the most powerful human emotions - fear and greed - are grappled with an on almost daily basis.

There are a lot of life lessons to be learned and many of the "rules" of trading can be applied to the world of technology entrepreneurship, especially in a day and age where startups are built to be "flipped" and entrepreneurial employees jump from one startup to another in search of the "big hit." Here are several trading "rules" that can be useful for technology entrepreneurs.

The Trend is Your Friend

In the startup world, spotting market trends in technology isn’t as easy as looking at a trendline on a price chart but it’s not too difficult either.

Most savvy and experienced entrepreneurs have a good sense of trends. They know which markets are meeting needs and seeing the creation of potentially valuable businesses, they know which markets are seeing increasing inflows of investment capital and they know which markets have a healthy level of M&A interest or activity.

While most entrepreneurs want to get into hot markets before they’re hot because there is the perception of greater profit potential, it’s worth noting that in the financial markets, the average investor only makes money in the middle of a trend. This is often called the "meat of the move." As such, entrepreneurs should consider that they don’t necessarily have to try to predict new trends and can instead place their bets when a trend has been established.

Example: Friendster popularized the modern day version of the "social network." It launched in March 2002 and it didn’t take long for Friendster to take off. Social networking was officially "hot." Yet a number of startups that launched after the social networking "trend" had been established have done far better for themselves.

MySpace, which launched in August 2003, sold to News Corp. for $580m in July 2005. Facebook, which launched in February 2004, has reportedly entertained 10-figure buyout offers. And Bebo, which launched in January 2005, recently sold to AOL for $850mn in the largest social network acquisition to date.

The lesson? You don’t always need to be "first."

The Trend is Your Friend Until the End

Some trends last longer than others but all eventually come to an end, hence the saying "The trend is your friend until the end."  Entrepreneurs should recognize that no matter how much they believe in the trend they’ve invested themselves in, the trend is only working in their favor while it’s intact.

In the world of startups, once a trend ends, if you don’t already have a viable, self-sustaining business and a revenue model that can realistically withstand a bit of a shakeout, any advantages that inured to you when you were going "in the direction of the trend" are eliminated.

Example: online video startups have raised lots of money and much of this money flowed into the market after Google’s $1.65 billion acquisition of YouTube in October 2006. And yet while online video has a bright future, the trend that supported online video startups looks to be waning. The fire sale of heavily-funded startups like Revver and PodTech is likely just the first part of a shakeout I predicted earlier this year and online video entrepreneurs relying solely on the "online video is hot" trend are not likely to fare well.

Don’t Try to Call Tops and Bottoms

One of the biggest mistakes a trader can make is to call market "tops" and "bottoms." In fact, this mistake probably accounts for the majority of the losses amateur traders make. Professional traders understand that they have no control over the markets. They are successful because they keep their emotions in check, think objectively, play probabilities and understand the importance of money management.

Amateur traders think success is dependent upon predicting what the market is going to do. They will rush head-first into trades because they think they can call market highs and lows. When it comes to startups, entrepreneurs should recognize that they don’t know when the hot new markets they’re in will lose their luster. Thus, getting greedy and trying to predict when it will "peak" so as to "get out" at the very top is foolish. See "Pigs Get Slaughtered" below.

Conversely, trying to predict when a market will rebound is equally foolish and the saying "never try to catch a falling knife" serves as a reminder to those who think they can call bottoms.

Example: with it becoming clear that many Web 2.0 startups aren’t going to make it, Om Malik suggested that it might be time to start a vulture fund that buys up distressed Web 2.0 "assets" at a bargain basement price. But just what is a bargain basement price? A startup that once raised $10 million but is being sold off for $1 million may still be overvalued and the worst could still be yet to come.

As I noted, "successful vultures don’t reap financial windfalls by buying everything that declines significantly in value." The bottom line is that most of the time, trying to predict when an asset has hit its lowest point in value usually leaves one holding an asset that continues to fall in value.

Pigs Get Slaughtered

Greed is the second most powerful emotion in financial markets (behind fear). Traders who are unable to control their greed and leave everything on the table inevitably become "pigs" and "pigs get slaughtered." While some "pigs" don’t think at all, many "pigs" believe that they will be able to predict the "top" of the market, as discussed above, giving them an ability to maximize profits. Few are successful and those that are typically mistake luck for skill.

The same goes for entrepreneurs. Knowing that trends don’t last forever and accepting that they have no knowledge of or control over when they’ll end, smart entrepreneurs recognize that there’s a time to take money off the table. In today’s Internet startup world, taking money off the table typically means selling your company. How do entrepreneurs know that they’re selling too early? They don’t.

Example: Facebook. The company led by wunderkind Mark Zuckerberg reportedly turned down 10-figure offers and instead choose to raise money at a ridiculous valuation, maintaining that he felt the company is better off remaining public and eventually going public sometime after 2008.

Yet Facebook’s valuation raised eyebrows - and skepticism. The company’s revolutionary advertising play (Beacon) flopped and the company’s shortcomings (especially around monetization) are now well-known. The public markets don’t look like they’ll be conducive to an IPO anytime soon given the company’s financials, leaving shareholders illiquid. Hence it’s no surprise that some Facebook shareholders are attempting not to be pigs - they’re looking to sell their shares privately.

Respect Support and Resistance

In the financial markets, support and resistance are key points at which supply and demand are in alignment. Support is the point at which demand keeps price from falling further and resistance is the point at which supply keeps price from rising further. Support and resistance are often found in the form of previous highs and lows, moving averages, floor trader pivots, etc.

While "buying into support" and "selling into resistance" are not hard and fast rules (support and resistance do break all the time), not recognizing support and resistance levels is a huge mistake. In the startup world, a similar dynamic of supply and demand exists.

Every "hot" new market gets hot because there is some demand. This leads, of course, to the creation of startups to meet it. Yet at some point, the supply exceeds the demand and the market is left with a field of companies that have essentially failed.

Entrepreneurs must be realistic and should observe the supply and demand dynamics in their markets.

Example: social networks. It’s unlikely that MySpace and Facebook are going away anytime soon because there is demand for them (support), yet the rise of the social networking market led to literally hundreds of social networking startups (more than a few of them funded). Clearly, the supply of social networks now exceeds the demand (resistance). Thus, launching a social networking startup today would be akin to "buying into resistance" and unless an entrepreneur has a valid rationale for that, it’s probably not a wise move.

Patience is a Virtue

In the fast-paced world of financial markets, it’s really easy to lose patience. When you miss a great trade, the desire to "chase profits" creeps in. When you’re looking too hard for trading signals that just aren’t there, "overtrading" can occur. The same problems are present for entrepreneurs who often find themselves scrambling to enter hot new markets when they feel they’re missing the boat or who feel the need to explore every opportunity that they think exists even when these opportunities are objectively dismissed.

Patience is a virtue for both traders and entrepreneurs.

For traders, patience often means sitting on the sidelines when there is no opportunity that gives you a discernable edge. It also sometimes means sticking with a trade (i.e. letting your stops take you out of a long trade despite your emotional desire to get out sooner).

For entrepreneurs, patience also often means waiting for the right opportunity. And while it’s far too easy to get emotionally attached to a company and not "cut your losses" when you should, patience can mean sticking with good opportunities even when they don’t get realized overnight.

Example: one need go no further than the conference and party circuit in Silicon Valley to meet entrepreneurs chasing opportunity and jumping from ship to ship in search of it. Most will not be rewarded by chasing success in this fashion.

And one need look no further than a company like Shutterfly to find entrepreneurs who were patient and "stuck with it." Shutterfly struggled to make it through Bubble 1.0 and its future still has a lot of uncertainty but it was able to go public in 2006.

Conclusions

Obviously, there are a lot of similarities between "traders" and "entrepreneurs." But there are a lot of differences too. While a considerable amount of wisdom gleamed from the financial markets can be applied to the entrepreneurial experience, I personally don’t recommend that entrepreneurs treat their business decisions like pure trading decisions.

Unlike with trading, some emotion is good for entrepreneurs - starting a new business (or going to work for a startup) shouldn’t be a detached process that is driven solely by profit. After all, the best entrepreneurs truly believe that their companies are doing something important and that they have what it takes - the best traders believe in no such thing.

Yet exercising the objectivity and discipline traders strive for and which the rules above demand can help entrepreneurs make better, more logical decisions. And that’s a good thing, especially at a time when so many entrepreneurs (and wannabe entrepreneurs) have discarded logic for hype.

CEO’s Pitch: Oriango was created to present a new search tool, making the users its only concern. The user chooses the content, and the editor makes it relevant throughout the quality of its content description.

All the information added to Oriango is arranged alphabetically, as in a dictionary, this way it is certain that only the name or the title will matter, allowing independence on their choices. Therefore it’s the user that chooses what is cool, not a group selection, votes or PageRank. The search is performed only on the information added by the users, not showing irrelevant or external content.

Mashable’s Take: Does it make sense to organize the Web in alphabetical order? A new site called Oriango seems to think so. Such an organizational strategy has been set forth by Oriango in order to put control back into the hands of the consumers when it comes to search results. I know what you’re thinking… no, it doesn’t make sense. Especially in this day and age where a website name may have little indication as to the site’s function, and may not even be a real word.

But Oriango hasn’t exactly organized the Web in alphabetical order by the site name - the actual site results are broken down by alphabetical order, and can be filtered by media type. Say you do a search for “wedding.” The search results, which span blog posts about The Knot, home loan advice, design agency websites and funny clips from Metacafe are organized according to alphabetical order, based on the name of each URL. From there, user interaction determines the relevance of each search result to a certain extent, by sending the search result to a bookmarking site or a friend, as well as sending a message to Oriango or reporting the link.

This still resolves most of the search results’ relevance to the hands of the Oriango editor, and may not be the most conducive way for you to search the Web. Additionally, Oriango is relying on user-submitted links to make up the bulk of its search results, meaning that the amount and quality of the links you’ll receive for a given search will be minimal until Oriango gains some traction. For the time being, there’s little incentive for users to submit websites to be included in Oriango’s Web “dictionary,” though bookmarking integration by way of user accounts could help on this front.

YourScreen is a new service that is announcing its upcoming beta today, and it’s set out to enable you to turn a television into a start page of sorts. Designed for use within schools, companies, and at events, YourScreen is a custom option for displaying your content on televisions. So what type of content can you post on these televisions?

Built on Adobe AIR, YourScreen comes with some ready-made content, like weather and a stock ticker, with more plug-ins on the way. You can use these plug-ins in conjunction with your own content or simply stream the content you’d like to display. This could be a live video of a speaker or an interview, an image slide show of companies presenting at a particular event, or other pertinent information regarding your company that you’d like to convey to your employees. So far, YourScreen doesn’t seem to offer much in the way of differentiating features that you couldn’t already take advantage of with a closed-circuit television system.

But as YourScreen grows, its aim is to provide a Web-based platform for easily managing content that is displayed across this television system. So you will be able to use the YourScreen Web interface to determine what content is shown in which screen. There are also tools for helping you create content, so you won’t have to rely entirely on third-party services to create a slide show. For instance, YourScreen can turn your collection of still shots and videos into a stream that can be broadcast across multiple television screens.

In targeting schools, businesses and events, I think YourScreen would also do well to partner with, or add integrated support for a wide array of content imports and compatibility. Services like Mogulus and Kyte offer platforms for creating content that is likely to be ideal for broadcast on custom systems like YourScreen, and also offer a good amount of tools for making multimedia content on the fly. Catering to users that may start with next to nothing when streaming with YourScreen as well as those that have already begun creating content with other Web apps would be a broader strategy for appealing to multiple types of users when promoting the YourScreen service. comScore is out with their June Ad Metrix analysis of the top online display advertising publishers and advertisers in the U.S. On the publisher side, Fox Interactive Media leads the pack with 52.3 billion ad views. MySpace accounted for 51 billion of the 52.3 billion hence my story title. Facebook came in sixth with 3 billion ads and Glam made the report in tenth with just over 2 billion ads.

On the advertiser side, Microsoft leads the pack with 5.5 billion ads purchased. In second place is the University of Phoenix with 4.7 billion ads - guess they have some open seats. Vonage and Netflix came in eighth and ninth respectively with just over 3 billion ads purchased.
