After warning me that he was coming to the CES Press Room and to “stay out of his face,” blog blowhard Jason Calacanis stormed over to me to “introduce” himself and slam my boss and brag about how much money he has. Money can’t buy you a snappy comeback, however.

When Calacanis was almost out the door, I yelled across the room, “Google’s better!” — than Mahalo (there’s your link, now quit your bitching), that is, the “human-powered” search engine that’s currently keeping Calacanis off the street. Having no response, he slunk out the door to peels of laughter.

Sarah Lacy’s long-awaited book on Web 2.0 is available for pre-order on Amazon.com. The title: Once You’re Lucky, Twice You’re Good: The Rebirth of Silicon Valley and the Rise of Web 2.0. It’s due for release on May 15, which means we’ll probably see copies circulating in late April. Future reviewers, let us save you the work of coming up with a kicker: Yes, the title practically begs for Lacy to announce a followup oeuvre to prove she, too, is more than just lucky.

Brit broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson, host of Top Gear, was shocked, shocked when a thief “hacked” his bank account, withdrawing $734 and donating the sum to the charity Diabetes UK. Clarkson downplayed the dangers of identity theft after two discs full of child-benefit claimants were lost last October. To prove potential victims had nothing to fear, Clarkson published his bank account number, routing info, and instructions on how to procure his home address in his weekly Sun column. He certainly proved his point.

I announce to the table, which includes a few colleagues from Gizmodo, and early-rising PR guy Peter Shankman, “I love when my editors tell me to interview people and I have no idea who they are. Like this jackass — Gary Krakow from MSNBC. Who the hell is he? I have no idea.” One of the guys across the table, who I don’t know, starts staring at me and tosses his press badge on the table.

After a couple moments of silence, Shankman says, “This is the most surreal moment I’ve ever been witness to.” Then, of course, he writes it up. Thanks, buddy.

By the way, Krakow has this to say about his new job:

Valleywag: Why’d you leave MSNBC?
Krakow: MSNBC wanted to go in a different direction. I needed more artistic freedom.
V: Does TheStreet still exist? Have you been paid yet?
K: Don’t worry about my paycheck. The new, redesigned site will be up within a few weeks with a focus on video.

There are plenty of conference events and parties to go to at CES 2008. The bloggers here never stop working, but what are bored mainstream-media hacks to do after they’ve filed their perfunctory handful of stories? Our short list of things to do in Vegas after the jump.

• Shopping: Your wife and kids want you to bring them back some Vegas goodies. Head to M & M’s World by the MGM Grand. You can get all kinds of M&M’s merchandise including clothing and every color of M candy imaginable. Not into M&M’s? Everything Coca-Cola is next door. Lots of classic Coke gear to purchase or head upstairs to the soda jerk and try the Tastes of the World, a taster kit of 16 different Coca-Cola products from around the globe.



• Free entertainment: Vegas is expensive, especially during a big conference like CES. Luckily for you, there are plenty of free attractions that are worth seeing. Head to the Bellagio after 8 p.m. The famous fountain show goes off every 15 minutes until midnight. Head to the entrance just to the right of the fountain and grab some gelato before the show.



• Strip shows: Besides gambling, Vegas is famous for its amazing shows. At Wynn, which has the dubious distinction of being the most expensive hotel on the strip, pick up tickets to Le Rêve, a Cirque du Soleil-esque production set in a very-impressive circular water tank. Beware, the show is dark Tuesday and Wednesday, so plan accordingly.



• Gambling: What would Las Vegas be without some gambling? Head to the Sahara for the lowest minimums on the Strip, including $3 blackjack. Make your gambling budget last longer while collecting as many free drinks as you can stand.

Having plenty of time on my hands while my compatriots at Gizmodo blog blog blog it all at CES 2008, I took a walk around the press lounge to check the ratio of Macs to PCs. The latest numbers peg Apple with a 7.3 percent market share in the world at large. Will the the press lounge be full of fanboys or stodgy old corporate types?

In an informal survey, I spotted 129 machines: 94 PCs and 35 Macs (disclosure: including my MacBook Pro). That’s a 27 percent share for Steve Jobs & Co. And you wonder why tech reporters spend so much time writing about Apple?

Sorry people, show’s over. Connected Ventures cofounder Jakob Lodwick has pulled the plug on JakobandJulia.com, his joint venture with his girlfriend, Star editor-at-large, and geekboy aficionado Julia Allison. “My interest in creating fuel for the gossip sites has dried up,” Lodwick writes on the blog. “I don’t enjoy the attention anymore.” We’ll hold you to that, Mr. Lodwick. Allison, however, doesn’t seem like she’s going to hold you much at all anymore, judging by the following response.

An extraordinary public slap, rarely seen in the genteel world of magazine publisher Time Inc.: Fortune appears to have momentarily taken executive editor Josh Quittner’s Techland blog away from him and handed it to rival tech writer David Kirkpatrick. Quittner’s recent blog rant about Facebook’s Beacon was wrongheaded enough, but entirely undeserving of this humiliation — republishing, duplicatively, a Fortune.com column by Kirkpatrick in Quittner’s blog. Kirkpatrick, left, declared that Quittner, right, had been “silenced” on the Facebook issue. He went on to tear apart, at length, Quittner’s argument. All the more shaming, because Kirkpatrick is — how to put this gently? — a laughingstock among his colleagues.

None of them want to say anything, though. Why? By playing the house sycophant, Kirkpatrick takes the pressure off the rest of Fortune’s staff to write the bootlicking tech-CEO profiles he’s known for — like his recent mash note to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Kirkpatrick’s probing analysis of Zuckerberg? He’s “nice.”

TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington notes the launch of European blog netowrk MyKinda with a swipe at MyKinda’s competitor BlogNation. He published emails sent by BlogNation founder Sam Sethi, a former TechCrunch writer, to Blognation’s employees and potential venture capitalists. Why? Well, there’s bad blood here. And we’re not talking about Sethi’s feud with Arrington, either.

BlogNation was originally a partnership between Sethi and MyKinda founder Lee Wilkins, a Brit living in Romania. The Sethi-Wilkins partnership went sour, with threats flying back and forth, and Sethi took control of the BlogNation brand. Arrington naturally saw this as an opportune moment to strike back at Sethi for launching a competing blog network after he was fired from TechCrunch UK.

In this three-way blogfight, Arrington’s motives are transparent. But what I can’t figure out is what Sethi and Wilkins are thinking. One, in launching their blog networks in Europe. And two, getting so emotional about it. This is the land of socialized medicine and siestas, people. Their most successful startups are obvious Facebook clones or $900 million writeoffs. If you’re going to fight, why not make it over something worthwhile? Oh right — this is Europe.
