CampusLive wants to be a 24/7 RA (Resident Assistant) for college students all across the country by providing real-time information that they can use. For example, students can use the Food Finder feature that lets them find out exactly which restaurants near campus are still open for delivery, take out of dining in. They can read reviews from fellow classmates and even contribute a review of their own and rate the establishment.

The home page is customizable and includes a search bar that can search Google, YouTube, CNN and most importantly the local campus area, including a people finder for the school. There’s a weather tracker that shows the local weather as well as other locations that the student selects such as back home. The TV listings feature shows what’s on the local channels.

The comparisons to another website that started as a service for college students, Facebook, are inevitable. However, CampusLive makes it clear that they don’t want to compete with Facebook but rather work with them. They’ve even gone as far as to integrate with Facebook so that students can actually see their live Facebook messages from their CampusLive homepage. There are plans to do the same with other social networks that are popular with students such as MySpace and LinkedIn.

The news feed is customizable so that members can display the news that they want to see first. They can include local, national and international news feeds. There’s also a QuickLinks feature that shows the most popular links on campus in an at-a-glance display.

CampusLive started in uMass and currently covers campuses in nine states and 26 universities and growing. There’s no question that this service does provide useful information for student in a timely manner. They need to continue to focus on adding more schools and more customizable features that allows students to build their own virtual dorm room on their site. The trick will be to convince everyone that they aren’t trying to another Facebook or social network which would surely get them a failing grade. If they can accomplish all that then they will pass with honors.

I’m trying to to come up with a decent way to introduce this - there really isn’t a sane way to approach this because the latest feature from Flickr, while fairly mundane in function, is borderline insane.

The service allows you to see new images as they come into the site and have been popularly rated as interesting (those on the FriendFeed night shift shouldn’t confuse this functionality with Tad’s Flickr Toy that shows the raw feed as they come in).

The bizarre part comes in with how they presented the information. The pictures show up on a rainbow trail spewing forth from a panda’s mouth.

On the original picture the background is derived from, the algorithm and method of selection of the photos is more accurately explained:

“Explore” is basically Flickr’s front page, an introductory collection of ever-changing photos to show people the kinds of things inside the site. Each day Explore displays 500 images, but those images are constantly changing, as new photos are uploaded throughout the day.

To some people, Explore is the ultimate beauty contest. It’s the pinnacle of Flickr, the achievement of achievements. They fret and conspire and worry, and actually get angry and frustrated, when their perfectly fine photos, never “get into” Explore.

Except it’s basically random. No matter how artificially “interesting” you try to make your photos (Explore photos are selected via Flickr’s “Interestingness Algorithm”, affectionately known as the “Magic Donkey”), Explore is still only 500+ images each day. And each day on Flickr, there are more than five thousand photos uploaded each minute. That’s each minute.

As for the Panda barf? A complete mystery that remains unexplained.

After the ride is over, both the driver and passenger can rate one another.

CarpoolConnect.com - Offers up international carpooling opportunities for people mainly in the USA, Canada and Europe.

CarpoolWorld.com - CarpoolWorld has been around since 2000, and continues to provide matching services for those looking for drivers and passengers. Also offers the ability to set up carpool groups for your company, club, sports team or just about anything else you can think of.

DivideTheRide.com - A carpooling site designed to get your children around to their activities. One person starts it, they invite people they trust, and then a calendar is created. Reminders are sent via email and text message.

eRideShare.com - Assists you in finding rides for daily carpooling, cross-country travel, running errands, or even to special events & club meetings.

GishiGo.com - A ride sharing system that charges $.99 for creating a post as either a driver or passenger, and allows you to post reviews of the experience after it’s over.

GoLoco.org - A social network style carpooling site that makes sure everyone pays their share of the expenses. Each mile of a proposed trip is calculated at $.50, then split between the number of people and then GoLoco receives a 10% share of the transaction.

The service also shows the environmental impact reduction of the people sharing a ride. Also offers a corporate version, which restricts results to people within your company.

RoadSharing.com - Enter the route for your proposed road trip and find people to share the ride with and split the costs. Has lots of international members, and it’s easy to spot who has the vehicle and who is looking for one.

TrafficBulldog.org - Billed as a commuter advocacy site, TrafficBulldog offers up news and suggestions on reducing traffic congestion via carpooling and other suggestions.

Zimride.com - Zimride offers carpooling for just about any distance you can think of in the USA. They have a Facebook application and have already built an app to be released to work with Android.

511.org - The San Francisco based 511.org site provides a ride share area where you can find other commuters to pool with in the Bay area. Carpoolers get free bridge tolls during peak hours, and if you start a Vanpool, you can receive up to $900 in gas cards.

Car-Pooling.com - Offers carpool matching for France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Carpool.ca - Canadians get their own carpooling site with Carpool.ca. Find rides, read up on carpooling etiquette, and other general tips.

CarpoolMatchNW.org - A carpool site focusing on Oregon and SW Washington.

Carshare.com - Carshare is a directory of carpooling services for the UK that you can look up by region or by just looking for ones that serve the entire country.

Liftshare.org - Focuses mainly on carpooling in the UK, but also offers up the chance to find walking and biking buddies.

MyRideSmart.com - Carpool matching service specific to the Atlana, GA area of the United States.

RideArrangers - In operation since 1975, RideArrangers is a program in Denver, CO focused on matching up people for carpools.

iKnow! and the Social Brain Network

MixMatchMusic launched its beta music service at DEMOfall 08 today. Before groaning about yet another music service, it must be noted that MixMatchMusic is striving to do something a little bit different than the rest. It’s not just a service for music fans but music artists as well. Also, it actually enables musicians to collaborate on music and profit from the collaboration. They can even engage fans and interact with them online.

Get in the Mix

Naturally, the heart of MixMatchMusic is its Remix Wizard which is a lightweight simplified version of its MixMaker Sequencer. It allows members to create their own remixes which can be downloaded and shared.

Other members can vote on the remixes, download them and share them as well.

The Remix Wizard is actually a widget that music artists can embed on their website so their fans can remix their the artist’s own music right there.

Consumers and Contributors

The service is for fans and artists called MixMatchArtists whom are members that contribute parts of songs, called stems, such as guitar riffs, drum and vocal tracks, works in progress, or finished songs.

The MixMaker audio sequencer is what members use to mix, match, mash up and manipulate these stems along with stems.

If You Remix It They Will Come

The MixMatchMusic marketplace allows fans to support indie music artists by downloading and purchasing their music. It also allows artists to distribute their music and engage with their fans.

MixMatchMusic provides a unique platform where music artists and fans can interact and share the music they love. The tools are easy to use and there’s no steep learning curve involved which means you can start creating new remixes immediately. Cerego introduced iKnow at DEMOfall 08 today as “The first intelligent social learning platform.” Basically, iKnow! enables people to learn faster and improve memory retention through patented learning algorithms that generate personalized learning schedules. Each person’s training schedule is unique because it is customized according to their optimum periods of time for studying and learning. This process is based on research conducted on optimum learning patterns in the fields of cognitive science and neuroscience.

Big in Japan

The url for the iKnow website currently uses the Japanese domain extension because it has been in beta in Japan for the past ten months. There are currently over 250,000 registered Japanese users studying English. Cerego plans to provide support for many other languages and even an open API for developers, which will mean many new applications based on their system.

World-wide brainshare

iKnow wants to become not only a tool to help users learn but also an intelligent social network where they can share and collaborate with other users. The goal is to get members to help each other grow and learn within their online system. Ultimately, users from all over the globe will be able to remix content and share them with others within the learning community.

Crash Course of Classes

The real proof in the pudding is actually taking a few courses to see how well iKnow worked. So I went to their English courses page which only has a few listings at this point in time but many more are sure to come. Right now there are some courses for vocabulary and SAT preparations.

The first thing you notice in any of the courses is the abundance of audio assistance on every page. This is especially useful in courses where you learn languages or need to hear how words sound such as in the vocabulary courses that I took. You can click the play button as often as you need to hear the word or sentence.

The other interesting thing you notice is how many ways different ways they ask the same questions which is an effective method of training. For example, instead of just asking a multiple choice question, you will need to actually spell out words as well as fill in the blanks of sentences. It forces you to learn the concepts even when you guess something correctly it will test you again in another manner almost as if to verify whether or not you were lucky or really knew the answer.

Making Learning More More

I was impressed with the amount of things I learned in a relatively short period of time. It was also kind of enjoyable and not painful at all. In addition to the regular courses, iKnow also has a game-like study course called BrainSpeed that’s fun and fast-paced. It’s timer based and conducts itself much like a gameshow.

It even maintains a top players ranking list and allows you to invite others to join the fun and learning.

Final Thoughts

It makes sense to combine the power of computer technology and the many benefits of social networking with this new learning platform from iKnow. Making the process a global experience where users can actually interact and assist one another is an excellent idea. If things go as well for iKnow then we could very well be looking at the future model of online training and educational systems that are effective and fun.

Turn Your Car into Public Transportation With Avego. But Would You Really Use This?

Sean and I have been using Chrome for a week now, and I’m using it as my primary browser. Sean’s still switching back and forth between Firefox and Chrome, but I’ve been 100% Chrome since it came out.

Sean and I discussed the nuances of the product release and the browser one week out from launch today on Mashable Conversations, and we outlined a few of our pet peeves about the browser so far. It’s important to note that these issues will likely be fixed very soon, but as of now, they’re significant annoyances.

Scrolling Difficulties: It’s a consistent problem, even in Google specific applications. When using the cursor keys to scroll with, the application itself will scroll off the screen, particularly in GMail. In GReader, when you use the cursor keys to scroll, all areas with scrollbars will scroll simultaneously. It’s a minor glitch, but it can be very annoying at times, since the only way to properly reset your view is to re-size the browser.

What’s Up with Facebook?: Facebook works fine for me, but I keep seeing complaints that the design is borked for most users.

Keyboard Shortcuts: Almost all the keyboard shortcuts work properly in Google Documents and Google Reader, but they are rather hit and miss in Google Mail. Particularly annoying is the absence of ability to tab between GChat windows in GMail.

Google Gears are Jammed: About half the time, Google Gears will just plain not work in offline mode. This is something I figured would be pretty reliable.

The Three Four Hour Tour: After about four hours of continuous usage, Chrome will occasionally become unusable. This isn’t like the memory leak problem in Firefox (a problem that has more or less abated in the later releases). What seems to happen is that CPU usage will spike extraordinarily and without explanation. Usually, closing the browser and restarting it will remedy the issue.

What Was That? I Can’t Hear You: This one is odd, and I’ve only been able to replicate the issue using the Viddler player, but when you play a video or record one using the Viddler player, after the first usage Flash seems to completely forget what a sound driver is. After that first usage, absolutely no sound will play from a Flash applet from any server.

The DEMO conference is filled with innovative, socially conscious, and inspiring products and companies. It’s also filled with quirky ideas that make you scratch your head and say… really?

Enter Avego, a new product by Mapflow, a Dublin and Palo Alto-based location intelligent solutions company. Mapflow’s Avego is a mobile phone-based service that allows you to save gas and time by using the empty seats of your car as public transportation. The Avego application, available for the iPhone, “automatically apportions the cost of the commute, providing a key financial incentive to commuters frustrated by high gasoline prices.”

According to Avego, the problem is that most people are far away from easy public transportation locations near their homes and workplaces. Because it can be a hassle and time-drainer to use the public transportation systems of most major cities, Avego connects you to willing Avego members who have similar routes and, using GPS and a secure PIN system, calculates and manages the entire transaction.

Sounds a lot like a taxi service, right? At least they admit it in the YouTube introduction that greets you on their homepage.

Avego lays out some great arguments for using their product, including:

-85% of cars travel with just one driver in a five seat car. That’s simply an inefficient use of our resources

-It saves gas and reduces the cost of rides

-No more public transportation-related stress

-Your commute becomes faster

-It’s environmental

-You make money by splitting the cost of the ride

These are all great reasons, and the environment angle is especially pleasing to hear, but in the end, the success of a product is entirely dependent on whether people buy into the product.

So answer this simple question: Would you take the time and risk to drive strangers around to work?

Most of us are comfortable in our own cars and can handle the commute, even if we do not like it. Many more of us have figured out routes that get us to work and back. One of the most difficult barriers startups face is changing people’s current habits. Avego is asking people to do that in a BIG way.

Would you drive strangers to work everyday? Would you wait around for a stranger that was running late? Would you be willing to drive an extra 15, 20, or 30 minutes to drop off these people? Can you handle possibly annoying commuters? Are you willing to figure out where everyone lives to pick them up?

Are you willing to become a glorified taxi service?

Not only does Avego face a huge chicken and egg issue (it can’t be effective without having critical mass, but people won’t join without critical mass), but it faces grave safety issues. Say that Avego begins to gain traction, but suddenly all of the cable channels pick up a story about how an Avego driver kidnapped a passenger. Do you really think Avego could survive that?

With cab drivers, you have a great deal of checks and balances against that type of situation. They are certified professionals with authorities to check in often. Even then, though, it happens. And the drivers are not out of danger’s way either. Avego will always have less preventative measures than a taxi cab company, making it a greater risk.

Avego is replacing one headache with another. Avego sounds great in theory, but the logistics, risks, and commitment are simply too much for the average person. It requires you to place too much trust in total strangers and assumes that people are willing to keep this headache in exchange for a minor amount of cash. I’m sorry, but I cannot envision people changing their habits for Avego.

Avego may become a more popular service with public transportation-minded European commuters, but I have serious doubts about its feasibility in the U.S.

Is Koollage Simply Squidoo With iPhone Functionality?

So apparently I’ve been dragged, kicking and screaming, back into the editorial department of this humble blog. First assignment: review the freshly redesigned Mashable.com from an objective perspective, in less than 400 words…

Rocks: Out With the Old

It’s better than the old one. Mashable’s layout was, up until this facelift, full of fail; a veritable bastion of bloat. A 3-column design crammed a narrow content column between two pillars of ads, topped by an utterly nonsensical navigation bar. Load times were laughable: anything between 8 and 12 seconds before the content popped into view.

The new version clearly takes a stab at improving the speed issue: a relatively lightweight design that emphasizes the blog’s core asset: its content.

Sucks: A Touch Too Much?

And yet the homepage, while undoubtedly cleaner than the old one, could be further refined. Why not standardize image sizes and their alignment? Why so many font sizes and styles?

Rocks: Tag Pages

These delicious tag pages, for exploring archived content on a certain topic, are carved from slabs of the purest Awesome. See for yourself: browse stories about Google, YouTube or Facebook.

Rocks: Related Posts

The related posts feature automagically serves up content from the Mashable archives, accompanied by a pretty little thumbnail image. Great for digging deeper into a topic, with a tempting visual prompt.

Sucks: Overshare?

I know every Mashable reader is on a zillion social media sites, but is it overkill to have this many sharing options? You tell me!

Rocks: Search!

It took a brave soul to venture into Mashable’s previous, haphazardly arranged comments system: glad to see this has improved. Keep it simple, stupid! (And they did.)

Ribbon Rocks! Ribbon Sucks?

Somewhere on the ROCKS / SUCKS borderline lies the “Ribbon,” an expandable content selector along the top of the site. While extra javascript on a page sometimes feels like extra baggage, I’m finding I love to browse stories in this way. A somewhat hesitant “Rocks” from me - how about you?

OMG, it’s the Conclusion

The “New Mashable” deftly avoids the fate of New Coke; it’s a return to focus, rather than a bloated feature-fest. If anything, I long for even less: with html websites becoming one of many outlets for the content they house, there’s little need for added extras.

And yet, there’s also ample room for innovation: blogs breaking away completely from the template format; re-finding themselves in an era of ever-shorter attention spans and increasingly fragmented media consumption. What would you like to see here? What is the future of the blog format?

Does the New Mashable ROCK or SUCK? ( surveys)

When I first saw Koollage, I thought its concept of gathering content you want online and on your iPhone in Pods (Packages-On-Demand) was interesting, but sounded vaguely familiar. Then it hit me - it sounded like Squidoo and its concept of Lenses for content. The other site Koollage reminded me of with its Klubs, Koollage Krew and Kool Factor was MySpace, and its content aggregation properties smacked of a prettier FriendFeed.

The idea behind Koollage is simple. Find content you want to pull together into a Pod, and make that Pod into your personal “podspace.” You can have more than one Pod, which means that Koollage actually has some interesting possibilities as a content aggregator with a different look and feel than something like FriendFeed, and it is already designed for the iPhone in addition to the Web - an improvement over the more vanilla look and feel of FriendFeed for those who find FriendFeed unattractive and difficult to use.

In spite of its similarity to Squidoo (right down to the color scheme and the idea of content widgets), I think the win goes to Koollage for getting to the iPhone first. It won’t be doing much that is different than Squidoo in the online space, but Squidoo has so far lacked a mobile presence, and now will have to catch up to Koollage in the mobile social content sphere.

Koollage has an overall young look and feel, and while the service may not be intentionally marketing their application to the MySpace crowd, that is definitely the vibe I get from it. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing - a young and vibrant look and feel can pull people in to the social content arena that haven’t played in that sandbox before. The ease of adding multi-media to the Pods I think will especially appeal to the glitter-graphic lovers out there.

As with any social application, there is a way to add and track friends on Koollage. This social feature is a must to compete with any of the existing content aggregation sites, Squidoo, FriendFeed or any one of the dozen or so more out there. I like that Koollage has included the ability to socialize but hasn’t made it the focus of their application. The focus of Koollage is the content in the Pods.

Koollage has done something else right as well by offering an easy way to navigate a Pod or series of Pods on the iPhone with the thumb-worthy nav bar. If you are an iPhone user you know that less is more with the touch screen. Koollage lets you move around the Pod using a nav bar like a mini player for the Pod. A very simple concept that will save the mobile user a lot of time.

Koollage has also taken business applications into account. You can have purely fun Pods, or Pods geared toward business, products and making money. Those who use sites like Squidoo as an income stream will love this ability being brought to an iPhone-ready application.

Overall, I don’t see Koollage as having a new application or new idea. Even so, I don’t think that is a bad thing. They have taken our favorite parts of several existing sites and applications (Squidoo, FriendFeed, MySpace), and found a way to merge them into a bright iPhone and iGoogle ready and Web capable application. It isn’t my cup of tea personally, but I think there is a definite market for what they bring to the table.

The Echo Nest’s Musical Brain to Add Intelligence to Online Music

Remember the days before the Internet when you would go to the library to browse old microfilm of newspapers and magazines for research? I don’t either, but in any event, Google’s latest initiative looks to bring all of that content online and make it searchable. The company is adding digital archives to Google News, allowing you to see full scans of original newspapers from the pre-Web era in addition to being able to search the text of them.

To use the new service, you can either go to the Google News Archive, or search Google News and switch to the “timeline” view. When a story is viewable in its original format, the search result will list “Google News Archive” next to the name of the source.

It’s not clear how much content has been indexed so far, but searches for huge events like “Kennedy Assassination” and “Pearl Harbor” don’t seem to yield any digital archives yet, so I’d assume the index is still fairly small. As an example of a search that does show some results, Google suggests “Americans walk on the moon” which brings up original articles from a number of newspapers on July 21st, 1969.

Google already makes historical content from The New York Times and The Washington Post available in search results, though the publishers generally charge you money to access it. For its new effort, Google has partnered with the likes of ProQuest and Heritage, two of the companies responsible for all of that microfilm you find at the library.

The Echo Nest and its “Musical Brain” developer website was introduced at DEMOfall 08 today. This so-called Musical Brain is really an open API platform for developing rich new musical experiences. There are more than 30 tool sets available for developers on their DeveloperNest. Here are the three primary API platforms:

- Recommend: Powers recommendations for users by understanding songs, reviews and articles from a target music site.

- Analyze: Generates an XML musical score for uploaded songs analyzing details such as beats, time signature, song sections, timbre and other attributes.

- Feed: Aggregates information about every musical artist on your website including all audio, video, reviews, blog posts and more.

A Piece of their mind

The Application Showcase shares several examples of what can be created with the Echo Nest. There are some silly fun apps such as More Cowbell which allows you to upload a song and actually adjust the amount of cowbell you want to hear for that particular song (based on the famous Saturday Night Live sketch). You can then share the results with anyone.
