eBay has denied the sale attempt, but there are too many people who’ve seen the deal book and have heard Deutsche Bank’s pitch. The big question is, will it sell?

With one big exception: live broadcasts, which are by definition shown at a certain time and watched by everyone then. Israeli blogger Tal Siach, one of the authors of the Walyou blog, seems to be one of the few people who can actually access the new, toolbar-free version of StumbleUpon. The new version was set to launch to everyone on Wednesday, but so far everyone I’ve spoken with is still on the old design, which requires the downloaded toolbar to function properly. Lucky for us, though, Tal is in, and wrote a review of what he sees.

StumbleUpon is a pretty unique site as far as social browsing sites go; no site with a similar concept (e.i. one click ‘random’ surfing through sites recommended by the community) has reached anywhere near its level of popularity. However, unlike - for example - Digg or Delicious, it requires users to do one extra step: install a browser plugin, which is something many users look down upon.

Not any longer. StumbleUpon now offers a web toolbar, which is basically a (relatively) unobtrusive frame at the top of the webpage, with the full functionality of the browser plugin. To use it, just go to the StumbleUpon homepage and click on a link. You can stumble sites (category stumbling is also available), rate them, send them to friends and read comments - all without installing anything. Of course, to get the most out of StumbleUpon you should register with the site, which - if you ask me - is pretty much the same thing as installing the toolbar. But, one extra step is removed and it can be a world of difference.

According to CNET, the folks at StumbleUpon have been mulling the idea to ditch the browser plugin over for years, but they were afraid that users would simply click that stumble button without rating the sites and participating in the community. However, clicking pretty much anything on the web toolbar without being logged in will remind you that you should register to fully enjoy StumbleUpon, which will probably be enough to persuade frequent users to do so.

Together with the web toolbar, StumbleUpon is launching a partner program, enabling sites to offer a “Stumble This” button with a counter representing the number of votes for your site. The more people click on it, the more popular your site is within StumbleUpon, and the more it’ll show up to their users while they’re stumbling. Furthermore, you can use the button to jump to related content, a functionality offered by many other services, plugins and widgets, but a useful one nevertheless.

Later today, you’ll be able to see how this works in practice on four major web sites who’ve agreed to enter the partner program: The Huffington Post, HowStuffWorks, Rolling Stone, and National Geographic.

StumbleUpon is announcing a variety of new partnerships today with regards to their StumbleVideo product. StumbleVideo allows you to thumb up or down a video and then get presented with another one, and another, and so on. Each time you rate a video, the system becomes more intelligent about the videos you like and dislike. Over time StumbleVideo presents you videos that you are likely to be interested in.

The new video partners are: College Humor, Funny or Die, Vimeo, Dailymotion, veoh.com and vbs.tv.Previously StumbleVideo only offered content from YouTube, Google Video, MySpace Video and Metacafe. These new partnerships should provide a nice life in viewed videos for the new partners and for the content creators behind the videos.
